It has been our experience that retirees sometimes worry that they are spending too much too soon. Should they scale back? Are they at risk of outliving their money? In our view these concerns are legitimate. We address them by constructing a financial plan with our clients, often segmenting their retirement spending into multiple time periods.
We refer to these segments as the go-go, slow-go, and no-go years. The duration of these periods and the dollar amounts will vary based on each client’s situation, but the concept remains the same, acknowledging that income needs will change as retirees age.
During the slow-go and no-go years, income requirements typically decrease. Comprehensive planning also factors in inflation and other risks, such as potential health events or the need for long-term care.
